John Rushing Sr.

John H. Rushing, Sr., 94, of Kingsport, passed away Friday, December 8, 2017, at Holston Valley Medical Center.He was born in the Ansley community near Troy, Alabama, one of twelve children of John Mack and Eula Spivey Rushing. After serving in the U.S. Navy during WWII, he worked at Hayes Aircraft in Birmingham before moving to Kingsport in 1960. He retired from Holliston Mills, Inc. in 1987 after 27 years of service.He was a member of Indian Springs Baptist Church where he was active in the Men’s Sunday Class and the Senior activities. He enjoyed all sports, having played baseball during his school years and for the U.S Navy baseball team. Mr. Rushing enjoyed old time and bluegrass music and looked forward to opportunities to play guitar and sing along. A master gardener, he cultivated vegetables and roses for many years while his health permitted. More recently, his favorite pastime was watching the grandchildren and great grandchildren in their music and sports activities.In addition to his parents, Mr. Rushing was preceded in death by infant granddaughters, Laura Davis and Christina Davis; sisters, Sara Barker, Mae Graves, Emily Redmon, and Shirley Renfroe; brothers, Mitchell, Carter, Frank, James, and Reynolds Rushing.Surviving are his wife of 72 years, Rose Barrett Rushing; daughters, Ann Rushing (Dave) Baldwin and Brenda (Mike) Davis; son, John (Sherrye) Rushing; grandchildren, Fara Childers, Joshua (Paula) Childers, Darren Davis, and Emilee Davis; great grandchildren, Connor Walker, Clemmie, Maelee, Stella, Greyson, Sequoia, and Jonah; sisters, Mary Motes and Margaret Swatzell, numerous nieces and nephews.The family will receive friends from 5 – 7 pm Tuesday, December 12, 2017, at Indian Springs Baptist Church, 325 Hill Rd., Kingsport, TN 37664.A Celebration of Life Service will follow at 7 pm with Dr. Dave Phillips and Pastor Jon Rogers officiating.Military Committal Services will be held at 3 pm Wednesday, December 13, 2017, in the J. Wayne Hamilton Memorial Chapel of Oak Hill Funeral and Cremation Services by the American Legion Post 3 and Gate City Post 265.Pallbearers will be John Rushing, Mike Davis, Dave Baldwin, Joshua Childers, Darren Davis and Connor Walker Childers.Due to inclement weather family and friends are asked to meet at Oak Hill Funeral Home at 2:50 pm.Entombment will follow in the Chapel Mausoleum in Oak Hill Memorial Park.The care of John Rushing and his family has been entrusted to Oak Hill Funeral & Cremation Services.Read Obituary
