Bernard “Bernie” Benkey, 83, of Kingsport, passed away Tuesday, December 24, 2019, at N.H.C., Kingsport. He was born December 5, 1936, in Sandusky, OH to the late Theodore and Lenora Benkey.Bernie had been a resident of Kingsport since 1966. He retired in 1999, as Production Manager for the Kingsport Times News following forty-one years of service.He enjoyed flowers, working in his yard, wood working and for the past fifty years his Thursday night poker games.Bernie attended Salem United Methodist Church and Shades of Grace United Methodist Church.In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Jean; second wife, Betty; sister, Pat Storer; brother, Robert Benkey.Those left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of twenty-seven years, Thelma Orr Benkey; daughter, Andrea McGowan; sons, Mark Benkey Jones and wife, Jill, Matt Benkey; step-daughter, Carmen Lockhart; grandchildren, Hannah Jones, Kessler Jones and Trevor McGowan; sisters, Ann Hammond, Barb Roth and Paulette Krantz.The family will receive friends Saturday, December 28, 2019, from 10:00-11:00 am in the chapel of Oak Hill Funeral Home.A Celebration of Life Service will be conducted at 11:00 am with Pastor Lew Kiser officiating.The Entombment Service will follow in Mausoleum IV at Oak Hill Memorial Park.In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Shades of Grace United Methodist Church, 313 E.
