Gray - Conney R. Payne, Sr., 86, formerly of Kingsport, passed away Sunday, January 5, 2020, at Life Care Center of Gray after a long illnes.Mr. Payne was born in Blackwater, VA and had lived in Kingsport most of his life.He served in the U. S. Navy during the Korean Conflict. Mr. Payne served in the Fighter Attack Squadron 35; three Air Craft Carriers the Roosevelt, the Tarawa and the Ticonderoga. He was on a World Cruise and two Mederteranian Cruises. He was a Lifetime Member of: the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Military Order of the Cooties, Disabled American Veterans and was a long time member of the VFW Charles DeWitt Byrd Post #3382 Color Guard.Mr. Payne was preceded in death by the mother of his children, Dolley Faye Lane Payne; his parents Worley and Canney Bowen Payne and several sisters and brothers.Those left to cherish his memory are his daughter, Tammy Payne; son, Conney “Junior” Payne, Jr. and wife, Judy; longtime companion of 27 years, Laura Kate Dalton; several nieces, nephews and cousins.The family will receive friends from 1:00 pm – 1:45 pm Wednesday, January 8, 2020, at Oak Hill Funeral and Cremation Services in the J. Wayne Hamilton Memorial ChapelA Funeral Service will follow at 2:00 pm with Evangelist Garry Hood officiating. Music will be provided by the Hood Family.Military Graveside Rites by the American Legion Post #3 and Gate City Post #265 will follow in Oak Hill Memorial Park in Section N. Pallbearers will be family and friends.In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice. Our deepest sympathy for your loss. Conney was an amazing man who loved his family, his country and most of all his God.
So sorry to learn of Conney's death. I never got to meet him. I am his first cousin. Baker Bowen is my father and Conney's uncle. Cannie and Baker Bowen we’re sister and brother. My heart hurts for his children and family. I will keep you all in my prayers.
