Edna Geneva Goins, age 89, of Kingsport, went to be with the Lord on Friday, June 17, 2022.Geneva was born on May 2, 1933, in Dante, VA, to the late B. Lemel and Ester Mae Watson Castle.She worked in the Holston Valley Medical Center ER for several years before teaching the kindergarten Head Start Program at Kingsley United Methodist Church and was a devoted wife, mother and sister.Geneva and her late husband Rex, were very active members of the Shriner’s and the Order of the Eastern Star.In addition to her parents, Geneva was preceded in death by her husband, Rex H. Goins; daughters, Darlene Barger and Dr. Beth Ann Goins; sisters, Barbara Powers and Nancy Barker; and brother, James Castle; step-father, Victor W. Castle.Left to cherish Geneva’s memory are her sisters, Linda Rogers (Wayne) and Cathy Cox (Gary); her loving canine companion, Captain; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.The family will receive friends from 5:00 – 7:00 pm, Tuesday, June 21, 2022, in the J. Wayne Hamilton Memorial Chapel at Oak Hill Funeral and Cremation Services. I want to share my condolences for Geneva who became our friend while she lived in San Antonio at her daughter's (Beth Goins) house. Lauren and I said we would adopt Geneva as our mother since our own parent's had already passed and because her daughter was my very good colleague and a great researcher and because Geneva had already lost her husband and her two daughters. We were able to share many memories with Geneva of her daughter Beth while we helped her take care of Beth's house. Geneva was a sweet lady who loved children and was a kindergarten teacher before retirement. We had many good conversations with her while she was in San Antonio and later on the phone when she returned to her beloved home in Tennessee to be with her siblings. Geneva always encouraged me to continue the research that her daughter was so dedicated to and she was always very happy to hear of its progress.
Geneva was mentally alert until the end. Only two weeks ago, I had a long telephone conversation where we talked about her work with children, our grandchildren and about the history of Beth's ancestors in Tennessee. I will miss talking to Geneva and I will alway keep her in my thoughts and prayers.

My favorite conversations with Geneva were usually on the subject of children and education. She and I had both been school teachers and we both agreed that teachers, especially in the early grades, play crucial roles in encouraging a child’s creativity and intelligence. Geneva was so observant and quick-witted and funny in the ways that only a southern lady can be. For Bill and me, she became our surrogate grandmother and we were blessed to have her in our lives. And of course, my husband was doubly blessed to have worked with Geneva’s gifted daughter, Beth Ann, during his scientific career. We are sending our sympathy and condolences to the family of Geneva Goins.
