Elizabeth Jewel Johnson, age 91, came into the presence of Jesus on June 10, 2019.Jewel was born in Pennington Gap, Virginia to Velton and Delores Lucas. She was also raised by her stepfather, John Goines. She was the youngest and last living of three siblings – Virgil Lucas, Helen Litton and Talmadge Middleton.In 1945, Jewel graduated from Pennington Gap High School, after which she attended Radford College and the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. A prevalent member of the Alpha Delta Pi sorority, she graduated from the university in 1949 with a Bachelor of Science in Education. In 1950, Jewel was crowned Miss Lee County, VA.Jewel devoted her career to teaching at Mount Carmel Elementary School, retiring from teaching in 1981. She was well-known in the community for her painting, basketry, sewing, and volunteerism. In addition, since the early 1990’s she has been a member of Mountain View Baptist Church. Jewel was married to Frank P. Johnson, Sr., for forty-two years. Jewel leaves behind a legacy in her children and grandchildren: her daughter Cindy Hawkins (married to Aaron), her son Dr. Frank P. Johnson, Jr. (married to Ellen), her grandson Dr. Brandon Hawkins, her granddaughter Abbey Johnson, and her grandson Cambron Johnson. Jewel’s family will receive friends Thursday, June 13, 2019, from 5:30 to 7:00 pm in the chapel of Oak Hill Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life Service will follow at 7:00 pm with Reverend E.
