Frederick “Fred” Zane Shafferman, 89, of Colonial Heights, passed away on Saturday, April 11, 2020, at Holston Valley Medical Center. Fred was born in Grafton, West Virginia and graduated from West Virginia University (WVU) with a BS Degree in Mining Engineering. After graduation, he served in the United States Army in the Korean War retiring as a 1st Lieutenant Colonel. He continued his service as a member of the Army Reserve for many years. After his service, he worked in mining equipment and product sales for most of his professional career for many companies such as Jeffrey Manufacturing, Hewitt-Robins, Lee-Norse, Ingersoll Rand, and Fairchild International. Fred has been a resident of Colonial Heights/Kingsport since 1972. He was a member of Colonial Heights Presbyterian Church and actively supported Meals on Wheels. He was an avid hunter and could be found in the woods of West Virginia every year during deer and turkey season. He enjoyed playing bridge and the bridge groups he has played with through the years. And, over the last few years, he cherished spending time with his special friend, Leslie Pope. Fred is pre-deceased by his wife, Margaret “Peggy” Shafferman and his brother, Gerald Ralph “Jerry” Shafferman. Surviving are his four children, Kyle F. Shafferman and wife, Lisa, of Mount Clare, West Virginia, Eric A. Shafferman and wife, Frances, of Corryton, Tenn., Kent D. Shafferman of Kingsport, Tenn., Amy Malone and husband, Michael, of Dallas, Texas and their mother, Sylvia Shafferman of Kingsport, TN.; three stepchildren, Robert L. Witte and wife, Anne Marie, of Hasbrouck Heights, N.J., Barbara Lynn Pagano and husband, Richard F., of Franklin Lakes, N.J., and Gary W. Witte and wife, Patti, of Vernon, N.J.; four grandchildren, Dillon, Hunter, Riley and Carlie; three siblings Lorna Jane (Shafferman) Perry of Grafton, W.V., Martha Lee (Shafferman) Murphy and husband Randall, of Grafton, W.V., and John Darryl Shafferman and wife, Kimberly of Grafton, W.V. A private interment will be held on Friday, April 17, 2020, at Mountain Home National Cemetery. A military graveside service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Kidney Fund, the Army Emergency Relief (AER) Fund or to Meals on Wheels.
