Russ Woodward, 89, of Kingsport passed away Saturday, November 9, 2019, at his home, surrounded by his loving family. Russ was born in Missouri on February 21, 1930 and moved with his parents to Montebello, California, where he graduated from Montebello High School. He attended Westmont College in Santa Barbara, California where he was privileged to study with Dr. Charles Ryrie, a renowned Bible scholar and Christian theologian. Upon completion of service in the U.S. Army, Russ began a long career with IBM and relocated to Kingsport. He married Ruth Ramey Woodward on May 16, 1959 at First Baptist Church of Kingsport, where he was an active member for over 60 years. Russ loved the Lord and his service at First Baptist Church included Deacon Chairman, Church Treasurer, Sunday School Director, and numerous other volunteer positions. He was also active in Civitan Club. Russ loved all sports but his favorites were golf, tennis, and cheering for his Tennessee Volunteers. Russ was preceded in death by his parents L.L. and Anna Woodward and an infant brother, Raymond. He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Ruth Ramey Woodward; daughter, Sondra Ryder and husband Robert; son Bryan Woodward and wife Cindy; daughter Karen Sherrod and husband Brett; and six grandsons whom he loved dearly; Benjamin and Luke Ryder, Jay and wife, Megan, Woody Woodward, Matthew and Tyler Sherrod. He recently became a great grandfather to Daniel and Ellie Woodward. A Celebration of Life service will be held at 1:00 pm on Thursday, November 14th at First Baptist Church of Kingsport, after which the family will receive friends in the Atrium. A Private Graveside Service will be held at Oak Hill Memorial prior to the Celebration of Life Service. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to First Baptist Church of Kingsport, 200 W Church Circle, Kingsport TN 37660 The family would like to extend special thanks to all the caregivers who lovingly cared for Russ. We are especially grateful for Sara, Karen and Kathy, as well as Susie at Smoky Mountain Hospice. The care of Russ Woodward and his family has been entrusted to the staff of Oak Hill Funeral and Cremation Services.
