Hugh “June” Everett Alley, Jr. , 93, passed away on Saturday, May 18, 2019, at his home in Stanley Valley, surrounded by his loving family.He loved animals and worked on the family farm prior to joining the Army during World War II where he proudly served in the 301st Infantry Division under General George Patton.Prior to entering the service, he married Anna Lee Roller in 1944 and was married for 74 years. After returning home, he continued farming and worked at Hamlett Dobson Funeral Home before working at Oak Hill Cemetery over 30 years as the Supervisor.After his retirement from Oak Hill, his love for animals continued as he began raising miniature Sicilian donkeys and miniature goats, taking his traveling petting zoo to local festivals. He especially enjoyed participating in events at the Exchange Place and sharing his donkey, Sonny Q, with the children.With time on his hands, he became creative and began making walking canes from trees he found in the woods, learned to make hickory baskets, and designed and made furniture that he shared with family and friends.He is proceeded in death by his parents, Hugh Sr. and Bessie Walters Alley and brothers, Oneal Alley and Ralph Alley.He is survived by his loving wife of 74 years, Ann Roller Alley, daughter, Connie Alley Bartlett, grandchildren, Garrett and Cassie Bartlett; extra special niece, Kay Alley; brother, Carl “Toddy” and wife, Thelma “Sis” and numerous nieces and nephews.A Graveside Service will be held at 12:00 pm Tuesday, May 21, 2019 at Oak Hill Memorial Park in Section A with Tim Vaughn officiating. Family and friends are asked to meet at the cemetery at 11:50 am.In lieu of flowers, the family would enjoy receiving a letter or card with a special or humorous memory of Hugh.During his illness, the family would like to thank close friends and family who helped him to be able to spend his final days at home; Carl “Shorty” and Patty Alley, Jeremy and Meagan Alley Vannoy, Donald and Lorie Chapman, Molly Birdwell and the wonderful, caring staff of Amedysis Hospice.The care of Hugh Alley, Jr. and his family has been entrusted to Oak Hill Funeral and Cremation Services.
