Ivan W. Spears 92, of Kingsport, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 1, 2019. He was born July 10, 1926, in Toms Creek, VA to the late Alfred and Ava McCoy Spears.Mr. Spears retired from Mead Corporation following over forty years of service. He was a proud veteran of the U.S. Navy having served during WW II. Ivan was a member of the Kingsport Masonic Lodge #688 and First Assembly of God for over fifty years where he served as a Deacon. Over the past few years he attended Shades of Grace U.M.C.In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy N. Spear; brother, Alfred Spears, Jr.Those left to cherish his memory are his daughter, Janet Payne (Larry); son, Joel Spears (Millie); grandchildren, Tim Payne, Michael Spears and Mary Spears; several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.The family will receive friends 5:00-6:00 pm Monday, March 4, 2019, in the J. Wayne Hamilton Memorial Chapel of Oak Hill Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life Service will follow at 6:00 pm with Pastor Will Shewey officiating. Music will be provided by Oscar Harris.A Military Graveside Service conducted by the American Legion Post #3 and Gate City Post #265 will be held at 11:00 am Tuesday, March 5, 2019, in the funeral home chapel. As a nurse at Brookdale Kingsport assisted living facility i had the blessed opportunity to care for and get to know Ivan. He was a blessing to so many of us at Brookdale. I remember the many times he would say goodnight with "I love you" and would express that he was praying for us. He is at peace now. Condolences to the family.
