We celebrate the life of Katharine Virginia Shivar. She was 98 years old when she passed away on May 5th, 2018. She joins her husband Stokes (Toby) Shivar, and sons David and Thomas Shivar. She is survived by her son Richard Shivar, daughter Sally Piercy, grandchildren Jennifer Oxendine, Sarah Cole and David Piercy and great-grandchildren Piercy Oxendine, Deshawn and Dylan Cole. Katharine was born in Greenwood, South Carolina in 1919. She met her husband Toby after graduating high school in Charlotte, North Carolina. After serving in World War II they moved to Kingsport, Tennessee to raise a family. They were married for 63 years. Katharine was an active and engaged member in Kingsport civic life. She was a long time member of the Parent Teacher Association, Kingsport Garden Club, Kingsport Symphony Women’s Committee and worked as a Teaching Assistant at John Sevier Middle School. She was an active member of Waverly Road Presbyterian where she participated in a number of ministries including the Shepherd’s and the Food Pantry. Her ashes will be interred at Oak Hill Memorial Park next to her husband in a service for immediate family only. To honor Katharine’s life, contributions can be made in her name to Waverly Road Presbyterian Church, 1415 Waverly Road, Kingsport, Tennessee 37664. The care of Katharine Shivar and her family has been entrusted to Oak Hill Funeral and Cremation Services.
