Mary Ellen Cole Alvis, age 88, of Blountville, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, February 29, 2020 at her home with her family by her side. Mary was born on August 18, 1931 in McMinn County, TN to the late Pearl Sylvester and Van Dora Hughes Cole. She was an extremely devoted wife and mother, serving as president of the PTA and Cub Scout leader for many years as well as a member of Walnut Hill Presbyterian Church, PCA. Mary was a very talented seamstress and also enjoyed gardening, canning, quilting and playing the piano. In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Richard E. Alvis, Sr.; brothers, Earl, Charles, John Herman and Frank Lloyd Cole; sisters, Margaret Poore, Marie Simentor, Jo Frances Brown, Kathryn Sampson and Sylvia Cole. Left to cherish Mary’s memory are her daughters, Pamela Alvis Cox and Linda Alvis Rothwell; son, Richard E. Alvis, Jr. (Theresa); grandchildren, Amber Alvis, Alan Alvis (Debbie), Karen Ager and Richard E. Alvis, III (Jessica); great-grandchildren, Matthew, Sarah, Logan and Cole Richard Alvis; dear sister-in-law, Georgia Alvis King; brother-in-law, Oscar B. Alvis, Jr.; Mary also leaves behind many loved nieces and nephews and their families. The family will receive friends from 1:00 – 2:00 pm, Monday, March 2, 2020 in the J. Wayne Hamilton Memorial Chapel, Oak Hill Funeral and Cremation Service. A Celebration of Mary’s life will begin at 2:00 pm with Rev. Andy Moehn officiating. The Committal Service will immediately follow in the chapel. Mary will be laid to rest with her husband, Richard in the Garden of Gethsemane, Oak Hill Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Mary’s honor to Walnut Hill Presbyterian Church, PCA or stjude.org. The family would like to thank Dr. Warren Jones and staff, Dr. Daniel Ibach and staff, and Suncrest Home Health and Hospice for the care and compassion given to Mary and her family. The care of Mary Alvis and her family has been entrusted to the staff of Oak Hill Funeral and Cremation Services.
